We were approaching that great but at the same time challenging moment of the year when we always decide on our summer destination! Of course, there was no question about the country: Greece!
The dilemma this time was which island to choose. Many suggestions had been on the table during the past few days until I met an old friend, a travel enthusiast, who, without any second thoughts or hesitation, recommended the island of Symi!! (wikipedia link)
Visit the Magic of Symi

Symi? I’d heard of it, but had never considered visiting. However, after browsing the internet, I was really captivated by the stunning photos and the information I came across. To make a long story short, we visited Symi and here’s what I can assure you about.
Unique architecture:
Upon arriving at the harbor of the island, called Yialos by the locals, you can’t help but admire the colorful picture of neoclassical mansions standing there as if they are waiting to welcome you! This marked the beginning of our fairytale holiday!
Culinary experience:
No one can leave this place without tasting the renowned local seafood, especially the tiny Symi shrimp. The traditional cheese pie, called Tourta, is also really mouth-watering! Those of you that have a sweet tooth (like I do) must try the local cookies that are really huge and Akoumia, a traditional kind of loukoumades – doughnuts. Tip: Don’t forget to read my following blogs; I’ll give you a yummy recipe so that you can also taste Akoumia back home. My kids absolutely adore them.
Swimmer’s paradise:
Symi boasts about its beaches with crystal clear waters. Some of them are accessible only by boat, offering a pristine beauty. Definitely a must!
Photographer’s paradise:
With such a wealth of natural and man-made beauties, everybody will be into photography in no time at all. You feel like you are in a real paradise, and you want to capture every corner of the island, every moment of your holidays.
Cultural moments:
If you belong to the ones that like combining relaxation with culture, then you won’t be let down. You should pay a visit to Chorio, the old village of the island, and discover traditional old houses, chapels, museums, and the War Memorial. One of the things that really impressed me was that all the houses of the island respect and follow the traditional architecture. Symi also hosts the Symi Festival throughout the summer months, featuring performances, concerts, plays, and exhibitions. There is definitely something covering your taste!
Monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis: Whatever your religious beliefs might be or not, you should visit this monastery. Being one of the most important religious sites in Greece, it’s visited by pilgrims from every corner of the world. When we saw the miraculous icon of the Archangel Michael, I got overwhelmed by the divine feeling the whole place offers. (Google Map Link)
There is one thing I can tell you about Symi;
it’s a place you’ll never get bored. You can relax on the beach, you can go hiking, you can explore the villages, you can take a boat trip, you can savor the local cuisine while chatting and laughing. It’s a place you’ll take with you back home.
There is only one bad thing about coming to Symi.
Once you come, you’ll want to come again and again. Year after year!
